Clochodrick Stone
Scotland, GB
Resembling a stony brain, this odd erratic boulder lies in the corner of a field on the outskirts of Howwood. It is attributed to Roderick Hael, King of Strathclyde, (Clach Roderick in Gaelic) who supposedly banished the Pagans and Druids. The Druids were said to use it as a ‘rocking’ stone to weigh justice and would have found its easy west ramp an accessible pulpit. 80s legend Paul Laughlan used it for stamina training. The boulder is only 3 metres high at most but has some good boulder problems and a few traverse problems. It is a fine spot for a summer evening. Many more eliminates and traverses can be created on this modest stone, giving it a lot more enjoyment than might be attributed on first acquaintance. If the field is being cultivated, early season muck-spraying can make it unclimbable, but this mud usually washes off after a few rain showers.
