Middle Mesteño

New Mexico, US

The most popular sector at Roy as it boasts a high concentration of climbing on good quality rock. Many blocks are BIG, but there are more than enough regular height problems to go around too. This is not the closest zone to the highway; however, it is probably the first you should visit. The Jumbles are a dense collection of streambed boulders, with pebbly beach-like landings. Some scrambling is required to navigate this area, look at the map for the best way to hike through here. During the winter there is no flowing water, although a surprising number of pools stay here more or less year-round. As such, some problems — e.g. Gorilla Panic V8 — may be inaccessible due to water landings. There are lots of problems in the Jumbles not described here — go play! Those with a commitment to height should not miss Sands of Time V1, Beautiful Pig V6, Icarus V7, Apocalypse Dreams V9 and One-Eyed Clown V10.. and stare up wistfully at the mega Dave Graham Memorial Project. Listed here are just the major lines which have been done — there are numerous, typically less-striking problems that are out there which are fun to go seek out. Additionally, there is still a lot of potential for new climbing here. There is not much rock between Middle and Upper Mesteño, however, but between Middle and Lower Mesteño there are many hillside and streambed blocks. Two of these areas are in the streambed — the Middle Jumbles and The Node (not to be confused with the Lower Jumbles which is in Lower Mesteño proper). As explained earlier, I have left these areas “off the map” to retain some of the adventurous character of Roy bouldering. Good luck exploring.
