Kastri

Kalymnos, GR

Kastri is a large limestone semi-circle comprising three sub-sectors: Kreissaal, Kastri Main, and Sophie (app only). The crag is directly above the first houses Emporios village, a quiet fishing village with a quaint harbor and beach at the end of the road on the northern edge of the island. Kastri takes its name from a small fortified castle from the Hellenistic period, whose walls still partially survive at the foot of the cliffs. Climbing amidst ruins of an ancient castle. An orange vertical pocketed wall and sharp slabs left and right. __Busy__ 1/3 __Climbing__ At Kreissaal, balancy climbing on good but very sharp rock. At Kastri Main, slightly overhanging rock with big pockets behind the ancient castle, long routes around two major corner features on the right, and plenty of good options from 6a to 7a+. (At Sophie, very sharp slabs with mostly lesser-quality routes by Kalymnos standards.) Please note that because this is an archaeological site, no route names are written on the rock. __Conditions__ Sunny and warm. Ideal for winter, early spring, and late autumn. The cliffs dry quickly after rainfall. __Shade (Exposure: S)__ _Kreissaal_ Until 10:30 _Kastri Main_ Until 12:00 __Kids__ So-so. The final part of the footpath is hard, but there is some good terrain near the ancient walls. __Kreissaal__ is above a slab of very sharp grey rock with ledges. Protected from the wind, it is best for climbing on cold, sunny days. Climbing is balancy, on highly featured rock with (very) sharp edges. Because of the sharpness, Kreissaal is not recommended for inexperienced climbers: a fall can feel like you’ve landed on a cheese grater. __Kastri Main__ features slightly overhanging rock with big pockets in addition to two major corners. When you arrive at the cliff, enter the goat pen under the ancient wall and follow the carved steps to the tower.
