Handegg (plaisir)

Bern, CH

The Swiss sport climbing pioneers of the 80’s came home inspired after climbing on Yosemite’s legend-ary granite walls where the free and clean climbing ethic was all the rage. They were determined to transfer these styles to the walls in their own back-yard. The compact granite shield like walls in the Grimsel were similar to Glacier Point Apron. In turn, Switzerland’s traveled climbers imported this free climbing spirit and put up breakthrough climbs like ”Fair Hands Line”. The use of clean trad gear was encouraged. Even now and despite changes in route development styles, slab climbing isn’t for everyone. But for those who master the craft, it is a fulfilling and unforgettable experience. Often the slabs are a bit wet in the mornings. As soon as the sun shines - depending on the season of the year after 11am, they dry very quickly.
