E.T.

Kalymnos, GR

E.T. is a good crag for climbing on sunny afternoons. Located in the fertile Vathy valley, it enjoys views of the fjord, the sea, and the Turkish coast. Perfect vertical rock and 40-meter-long routes overlooking the valley of Vathy. A small cave with hard tufa routes to the right. __Busy__ 1/3 __Climbing__ Delicate and balancy lines, requiring good footwork, on smooth or low-angle walls with good slots and pockets, and long, sustained routes with an alpine feel (some outstanding values at 6a–6b). At the cave, powerful, very steep routes. Unless otherwise noted, all routes were bolted by Claude Idoux in 2010/12. __Conditions__ Very cool. Ideal for hot afternoons in spring, summer, and fall. Exposed to all but the south wind: bring long sleeves for belaying, and hats for the sunny path. __Shade (Exposure: NE)__ After 10:00 (Koukouvas), after 12:30 at Buttress, and almost all day at E.T. Cave. __Kids__ The approach is long and sunny. Otherwise OK. At __E.T. Main Buttress__, thin technical climbing on a compact wall and slab. To return from multi-pitches, abseil down. Bolting can be sparse on easier sections. Gear: 80m rope + 18 QDs obligatory. __E.T. Cave__ features hardcore, very steep tufa and pocket-pulling climbs. The cave sits in the shade almost all day, which is a bonus, but it doesn’t get any wind, so it can feel hot and stuffy during warm months. To get there, just go to the Main Buttress, then scramble up to the obvious cave on the right.
