Rooiberg

Western Cape, ZA

The Rooiberg crags were originally discovered by Tony Lourens who developed a few single pitch sport and trad routes, but it was David Mercer, along with Craig Turvey who made the crag their own by putting up a generous clutch of quality multi-pitch trad routes. Over the past few years, Rooiberg has grown into one of the best moderate climbing areas in the Cederberg, and now with the development of Red River Crag, which has added a bunch of routes very close to the campsite, Rooiberg has about 20 quality sport routes to offer in a beautiful, tranquil Cederberg setting. The huge walls and crags of the main wall face more or less south-west, which means that climbing here can be enjoyed most of the year except in the dead of winter, when the wall hardly sees any sun and is rather chilly. In the summer months, the wall is in deep shade till 1 to 2 pm. So the plan is to get up there early, crank till lunchtime, then drop down to the camp for a swim and some relaxation. Rooiberg Crags: Mostly long vertical pitches on good hard sandstone in a big mountain setting. Red River Crag: A convenient fun crag close to the campsite with some cool routes. Potential for more routes including some easier ones as well.
