Jerome’s House

Peloponnese, GR

__Jerome’s House__ is a few kilometers outside Kyparissi, near the village of Hárakas and the mountain pass, at the point where the scenic mountain road from Hárakas starts its descent to Kyparissi. Here, the Myrtoan Sea first appears in all its cobalt glory. The main crag is not visible from the road, as it sits just beneath it. (However, sub-sector Stavrós, a small cliff with morning shade and a distinct mountain feel located next to the impressive zigzag old path called gýres, can be seen across the ravine.) The approach path to Jerome’s House is somewhat problematic (see “Approach”), but as soon as you arrive at the cliffs your mood will markedly improve. The climbing is good, with cool conditions and plenty of space for belaying, views are fabulous, and the lone house in the distance feels like an old, familiar friend. __Climbing__ The main cliff at Jerome’s House is a quality compact grey wall with good but hidden holds, and ideal for climbers looking for grades between 6a–7a+. Unusual, prominent features are in the mid-section. The rock in the lower part of the routes looks awkward, but the climbing is good, slabby, and balancy. Holds are sharp and stand to improve with traffic. (Stavrós, the sub-sector across the ravine, is more mountain-style, but good for morning climbing on hot days. For detailed info on Stavrós, see next page.) Routes at Jerome’s House were equipped for the CLIMB KYPARISSI PROJECT by Claude + Christine Remy and Aris Theodoropoulos, with assistance from Yiannis Metaxotos, in 2015. __Gear__ A single 70m rope (minimum) + 15 QDs (routes up to 30m) or 20 QDs (routes longer than 30m). __Conditions__ Breezy and cool, thanks to the location near the mountain pass. Best on warm spring and autumn days and on hot summer afternoons. Combine the two (Stavrós in the morning, Jerome’s House Main in the afternoon), to effectively climb in the shade all day. __Shade (Exposure: N, NE)__ Until 14:30 at Stavrós. After 12:00 at Jerome’s House. __Kids__ No.
