Teufelskanzel

Harz, DE

If there is something like a classical boulder area in the Okertal, it is the Teufelskanzel. People were always playing around at the start of the routes or the water polished slabs of the lower Teufelskanzel crag. The first documented boulder problems were established in the 1980s, when Hans-Jörg Böhm spent a lot of time out there. Besides the slabs, the lower Teufelskanzel hosts also THE highball problem in the valley: Silke und Jill, climbed 1987 by Bernd Fengler. Crash pads were unheard of in these times, a fact you should think about 5 m above ground. Bernd had always nerves of steel (or none at all, if you come to think of it...). But in addition to these classical climbs a lot of fine problems exist just above the Teufelskanzel. Some were also climbed in the 80es, but most of them were again established by Hans-Jörg in recent years, where he re-started his climbing career motivated by the bouldering wave. The sector also hosts a nice collection of hard problems at the Frosch. Another less common feature is the 20 m long traverse at the Tunnel, just next to the car park. The climb is on unusual "Hornfels" and remains dry for a long time, even after heavy rains.
