Magic Wood

Graubünden, CH

1999, a group of climbers, among them Thomas Steinbrugger and Bernd Zangerl, started the laborious cleaning of the greenish gneiss blocks situated near Ausserferrera. They called the primeval forest, which was heavily blocked, “Magic Wood”. Due to the huge accumulation of 8th degree boulders and rocks it seems like they were created just for bouldering, Magic Wood quickly became one of THE international boulder hot spots and is now well-known beyond the Alpine region. Due to its increasing degree of popularity, conflicts with the local population were soon born: overcrowded parking lots, numerous wild camping incidents and heaps of trash were only some of the problems. Only due to the very dedicated commitment of Steini and Bernd an imminent closing down of the area could be prevented. By now a camping site has been built as well as additional parking spaces and climbers are now accepted in the region. Consequently, it seems that this highlight will be preserved for future climbers.
