Prophitis Andreas

Kalymnos, GR

Prophitis Andreas is a large cliff that sits near the highest point of the Skalia–Palionisos road. The main cliff is spread out to include numerous long lines, very solid rock, varied climbing styles, and a bird’s eye view of the sea, Calavros islet, and Telendos from a different vantage point. There is still potential for new lines. Of the three smaller sub-sectors, Elephant Slide is in the app only, Chinese Wall is a small shady slab and wall with easy routes, and Hercules is a remote northeast-facing orange wall with routes on vertical or off-vertical fresh orange rock high up on the hillside overlooking Palionisos, just on the other side of the Prophitis Andreas main cliff. Well-bolted routes on an exceptional vertical grey wall and featured red rock. Ideal for grades from 6a to 7a. __Busy__ 2/3 __Climbing__ Varied, with some fantastic compact slabs up to 40m high. Routes can be sharp, but they are well-bolted. Gear: 80m rope and at least 20 quickdraws. __Conditions__ Best for spring, autumn, and winter. Cliffs stay relatively dry after rainfall. Good for early morning climbing in summer, especially on hot days with a northerly breeze. Not good on very windy days. __Shade (Exposure: SW)__ _Prophitis Andreas_ Until 13:30. _Chinese Wall_ Until 16:00 _Hercules_ after 15:00 __Kids__ Only at Prophitis Andreas Main and Chinese Wall. __Chinese Wall__ is is a newer small sub-sector located on the left of the main sector. It is a shady northwest-facing grey/white cliff with easy routes on low-angle slabs and walls, with the potential for more. __Hercules__ is a remote, northeast-facing mini sector high on the hillside above Palionisos, directly behind the Prophitis Andreas main cliff. It is the obvious orange wall below the ridge, clearly visible while lying on the beach at Palionissos. Routes are on vertical or off-vertical fresh orange rock. All routes were bolted by Mike Reed and Rory Gregory in 2020. Hercules is best approached from the end of the road at Palionisos (37.0457, 26.9677). Approaching from the main Prophitis Andreas cliff is also possible but adventurous and hard to find. Details on map.
