La Cava / Litigometro

Liguria, IT

La Cava is an impressive crack on the hillside, opposite the sectors of the Valle del Vero; this area is historic for the Toirano area, even though at first sight it did not seem to offer great climbing possibilities. Local climbers like Samuele Meinero and Luigi Minetto worked for years in this cave and they realised its potential. The north-east facing wall has top quality rock, so locals were able to bolt several medium to difficult routes that have become some of the most popular in Toirano, especially during the hot season since these sectors are in the shades already in late morning and the area is generally quite windy. The most interesting structure is Placca dell’Artista, a 35-meter high compact grey rock structure; there are mainly slab routes and require a good technique. The Litigometro sector is on the right: a small complex structure with some vertical routes on the right, difficult and overhanging ones in the middle and a easier slab routes on the right. Placca Rosa is above Litigometro, here there are sloping routes (also two-pitches) with a medium to easy grade. On the left there is the short wall of the Cristalliera, with intense routes on a vertical wall with tufas. Continue with McCarthy, a short overhang with intense routes, while continuing to the right you get to the last crag, the Placca del Pupillo, with technical routes on smoothed rock..
