Faulensee

Bern, CH

The early climbs at the Faulensee Crag were done long before the advent of sport climbing. For it was here in the cracks and corners where climbers in their heavy mountaineering boots would train for the long mountain climbs of the Bernese Oberland. By the late 70s, the local sport climbers already had their eyes on the steep face climbing potential between the crack lines. Routes like Fantomas, more technically demanding than the old classics, was the first 7b put up in the Bernese Oberland. The popular easier climbs are now mostly quite worn and polished down low, but they can be surprisingly grippier up high. The hard climbs demand precision-like footwork and are often crimpy in nature.
