Aghios Mamas

Kalymnos, GR

Aghios Mamas is a crag very close to Pothia, the main port town. A visit to Pothia may not be high on climbers’ to-do lists, but Aghios Mamas is a solid reason to visit the island’s capital, particularly since the fantastic new sub-sector La Vague was added. A crag near Pothia with a worthwhile new hard sub-sector (La Vague) featuring mostly steep tufa and cave routes. __Busy__ 1/3 __Climbing__ Sub-sector La Vague is a significant addition to Kalymnos climbing. An impressive cave like an oversized stone wave made of high-quality orange Kalymnos rock is on the left. It features hardcore climbs with a steep-tufa, pocket-pulling character. La Vague Right, with a small cave and wall off to the sides, is more suitable for mere mortals. Routes are new and not often climbed at the time of writing, so they are waiting for more traffic to go from very good to great. Twin Caves, meanwhile, adds a few more steep overhanging routes alongside easier wall climbing on the right. Sub-sector Twin Caves was bolted by Claude Idoux in 2016, and sub-sector La Vague in 2020, during the covid-19 lockdown, by Claude Idoux with a team of strong French climbers. Note that routes at sub-sector La Vague have not been climbed much yet. They have only seen a few ascents, and they need more cleaning. Some tufas may still break, so look out. __Conditions__ Warm and protected, despite hours of morning shade. Best for climbing in winter and on cool or cloudy days in spring and fall. __Shade (Exposure: NW, W)__ Until 13:00 at La Vague. Until 16:00 at Twin Caves. __Kids__ Only at Twin Caves. La Vague is not good for kids.
