Nifada

Peloponnese, GR

__Nifada__, a beautiful, colorful cave in the mountains (800m elevation) is remote and cool. Amongst the crags of Daphnon Gorge, near Kosmas village, Nifada is at the highest point. The rock is excellent, colorful, and steep. If your comfort level is squarely in the 7a–8c range, this sector is for you. Along the path to Nifada you will also pass Frankenstein, a mini crag included here as a sub-sector. Its rock and the quiet, verdant location between the trees, are reminiscent of the Frankenjura. After climbing at Nifada, you would be remiss not to visit Kosmas (9.7km away), one of the prettiest Peloponnesian mountain villages at 1150m elevation. Under the shade of fir, chestnut, walnut, and plane trees, the Kosmas village square is perfect for enjoying a bowl of fasoláda (creamy bean soup) in cold weather, or some mountain tea with honey and karydopita (syrupy spiced walnut cake) if you have more of a sweet tooth. __Climbing__ On colorful red rock of excellent quality with steep, hard tufa and pocketed routes. Nifada was developed in 2015 by the powerhouse Austrian duo Angela Eiter and Bernie Ruech. Routes are hard but well-bolted, and the climbing is optimal for 7a–8c climbers. Since 2015, more routes have been added in the main cave as well as on the short section of rock to the right. __Gear__ A single 80m rope + 20 QDs. __Conditions__ Ideal for climbing in spring and fall; summer too. Well-protected in case of (brief ) rainfall. In winter it is usually, though not always, cold. Most of the routes are wet until late March. __Shade (Exposure: N)__ All day on the right. Until 16:00 on the left (in spring and summer). __Kids__ No. A hard path and steep terrain around the cliffs.
