Langenstein

Harz, DE

Well, the comparison of a boulder area with Fontainebleau is somewhat stale meanwhile, but in this case it is definitively appropriate. The quality of the sandstone is beyond any doubt, and the climbing style carries a sweet remembrance to the climbing south of Paris. Crimps, pockets, sloper, cracks - you can find them all here, as well as the oaks and pines. Perfect bouldering, a nice landscape, practically zero access, a family-friendly environment, you can hardly ask for more. Except maybe the real hard problems and of course much more of blocks like these. Langenstein has also some cultural attractions to offer. The cave-houses just on the other side of the hill are a must-see, and the concentration camp memorial reminds us of the darkest episode in German history. The culinary desires are covered by the Schäferhof, a nice farm-café-guesthouse nearby.
