Rian Cornei - Settore Italsider

Liguria, IT

Cornei is a faithful image of the Finale Ligure area in the past and it’s a small part of the surrounding wild environment and time seems to have stopped here...if it weren’t for climbers. In this area there are many valleys, small or big, with a fascinating, rich, harsh vegetation. Rocks here are everywhere, some low, some high, some long and wide. It’s easy to understand why climbers like Fulvio Balbi and his friends Diego Nesi, Aldo Chiesa, the famous group of the Cravasards, were drawn to this area in the 80s. Here they created routes and bolted sections (the Placconata Centrale for instance) that are now a symbol of a way of climbing in which discovering is more important than the difficulty grade. The Cornei area still has areas to discover and explore, climbers like Marco Tomassini, Andrea Costaguta and Giorgio Delfino continue their exploration of the area, discovering new walls in this wonderful and peculiar climbing site. We can divide the valley in a right side (descending from Orco) and a hydrographical left side. The Italsider is an ideal sector for the summer months. It consists of a group of crags which offer very diffrent climbing styles: a bit of everything including vertical walls, small caves, bulges and slabs and even a boulder area and all of this always on optimum rock with sharp edges.
